Kalenderblatt März 2024/Calendar Page March 2024

Hier also das Kalenderblatt für März 2024.  Here is the calendar page for March 2024. 😊 During a walk along the Kaiserstuhl, close to the ruins of the Limburg on the Rhine, we had the opportunity to listen to a song that was sung with great enthusiasm. 😊

NZ, 5. Teil, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

Along the shore of the ➤Lake Pukaki, we drove on to the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
There we wanted to visit two of the Alpine glaciers: the Hooker Glacier and the Tasman Glacier.

Lake Pukaki

The road leads along a broad valley, formed by glaciers.

Almost lost, the Tasman River meanders through the valley. But being in New Zealand (and above all in the Alpine region) it could happen that a sudden, heavy rain would fill this valley with water within a short time.

Immer das Ziel vor Augen: der Aoraki/Mount Cook
Always having the Aoraki/Mount Cook in our sight

Then we arrived - at the starting point of the Hooker Valley Track that leads to the Hooker Glacier at the foot of the Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Der Hooker Valley Track und der Hooker Glacier

The Hooker Valley Track and the Hooker Glacier

First the trail leads over high, partly overgrown and partly "crumbly" moraines, and then you'll come to the first glacier lake, the Mueller Lake. And here we have again a new variant of the color BLUE: ice-blue! 😉

Doch was erwartete mich da:

Well, and then .... my dear readers ... I'm not at all free of giddiness and I'm terribly scared of heights! But while planning my stay in NZ my friend asked me, whether bridges would bother me in any way, and I answered lightly: "as long as there is a railing on it ... nope." I did not mention that neither the floor nor the railing of the bridge should be transparent, and the bridge should not SWAY! 😵
But this is what was waiting for me:

And I learned: there are three of them on this track to the glacier... and there is no other way back (unless you let yourself be rescued by a helicopter!). Oh, my God! 🙈

Doch der Adrenalinschub lohnte sich.
But the adrenaline rush was worth it.

Incredibly impressive: carpets of flowering Mount Cook buttercups (Ranunculus lyallii); as the name suggests, from the Ranunculus family. Up to 1 m high plants, more than palm-sized, round, glossy leaves, the flowers up to 8 cm in diameter. These flowers occur in New Zealand only in the South Island and on Stewart Island at altitudes of about 700 - 1500 m. Gorgeous!

One more time a gorgeous view back in direction of the Lake Pukaki ...

... denn vor mir zeigte sich DAS 🙈🙈:
... because ahead I had to face THIS 🙈🙈:

Schwankende Brücke + tiefes Tal ⇒ Adrenalin² ⇒ Blutdruck⬆⬆ + Puls⬆⬆ + WAHHHH⬆⬆

The problem with my suffering from vertigo is not due to the fact that I did not trust New Zealand's construction and engineering skills ...
...only THIS bridge was even longer and higher, and the formula that followed was simple:

Swaying bridge + deep valley ⇒ Adrenaline² ⇒ blood pressure⬆⬆ + pulse⬆⬆ + AHHHH⬆⬆

😵😵😵

After I had calmed down again, we went on 😅 ...

... entlang des milchig-trüben, eisblauen Hooker Rivers. Langsam kam der Aoraki/Mount Cook in Sicht.
... along the milky-murky, ice-blue Hooker River. Slowly the Aoraki/Mount Cook came into sight.

Kleiner Gebirgssee/Alpine Tarn

Also gut, die Nummer 3! Die harmloseste von allen, fand ich...
Alright, the number 3! The most harmless one of all, I found...

Once again over a moraine and then there it was in full magnificence - right in front of us: the Aoraki/Mount Cook (3724 m) ...

...and the Hooker Glacier with the glacier lake and the icebergs. The way there was really worth it!

We were in total about 5 hours on the Hooker Valley Track - also due to many photo breaks and that we almost could not tear ourselves away from this gorgeous view.

Brrrr! Er kam glücklicherweise wieder heil zurück - ohne Kreislaufkollaps!
That audacious guy even swam through the freezing cold water. Brrrr! Fortunately, he came back safely - without a circulatory collapse!

Many rocks and stones attracted me ...

Kleine Felsen...
Small rocks...

... große Felsen...
... big rocks...

... von Wasser und Eis geformte Steine...
... stones formed by water and ice...

... von Menschenhand aufgetürmte Steine...
... stones piled up by people...

... Steine mit klaren Aussagen...
... stones with clear statements..

... and stones with mysterious messages (I thought the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything" was 42 and not 31 - or actually only 3?!) 😏

Eventually we HAD to tear us away and we had to go back.

(Hopping on those bridges is mega fun!)

Da wird nicht gehopst! Klaro?! (You won't hop there! Got it?!)

On our way back to Christchurch on the following day, we made a side-trip to New Zealand's biggest glacier:

Der Tasman Glacier und Gletschersee

The Tasman Glacier and Lake

Astounding for me again, were the giant piled up moraines! I've never seen that before!

Then the glacier and the lake with the outlet into the Tasman River.

Faszinierend wieder der Blick zum Gletscher am Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Fascinating again the view of the glacier at the Aoraki/Mount Cook.

In the light of current events something very personal:
While I was writing this post, the brutal attacks on the mosques in Christchurch happened! This senseless, cowardly act shocked me deeply and made me very concerned. Dear New Zealanders, I am with you in my thoughts!

  11. Thank you for sharing your spectacular journey through Mount Cook National Park! What amazing scenery! Honestly, a transparent bridge would freak me out too.

I’m in the United States. I am sad that Christ Church suffered the type of mass shooting that is all too common here. At least the New Zealand government is taking steps to try to prevent another such attack - unlike our government.
